Why You Might Need To See Your Gynaecologist

A gynaecologist – or gyno as they are commonly referred to – is a doctor who specializes in women’s health. As a woman, it is really important that you see your gyno every year. So that you can get a regular checkup to make sure that you have a full bill of health. There maybe some times when you need a one-off appointment so that they can check out some irregular symptoms. Here are a few reasons why you might need to see your gynaecologist outside your annual routine checkup.

There’s A Chance You Might Have An STI

If you think that you might have contracted an STI, then you really do need to book an appointment with your gyno. They will need to hear why you think that you have a sexually transmitted infection and any related symptoms that you might have been experiencing. Remember that some of these infections can lie dormant. So if you have ever had unprotected sex it is always best to get checked. Even if you don’t experience any common symptoms.

You’re Overdue A Pap Smear

Can you remember when your last pap smear was?. If it hasn’t been for a few years, you might be overdue one. Give your gyno a call so that you can get booked in. During the smear, cells are taken from the cervix and tested to see if there are any cancerous ones. If something unusual is detected, then your gyno might put you on a course of topotecan treatment to treat any potentially dangerous cells. Make sure you don’t skip any smears as cervical cancer can usually be treated when it is caught in the early stages.

You’ve Been Having Discomfort When Urinating

Is it painful to go to the toilet?. If it hurts to pee, then you should definitely see your gyno. This could be a symptom of a number of conditions, so it’s good to get it checked out so that you can start the necessary treatment. More often than not, this is a sign of a UTI which can quickly be treated with a course of antibiotics. However, it might be a symptom of something more serious, such as an STI or cervical cancer.

Your Periods Are Irregular

Unless you are pregnant, you should be having one period a month. It’s perfectly natural for your period to be slightly early or late from time to time. But if they are often irregular then you should see your gyno. This could be a symptom of polycystic ovaries or another condition that is causing a hormonal imbalance. Your gyno will ask you about your experience of periods and will test your hormone levels so that they can figure out what is going on. Once they find out the cause of your irregular periods, they will then be able to think about the best course of action to make them regular again.

As you can see, there are a few reasons why you might need to book an appointment with your gyno!.
